In April 2006, eCompressedair added a Google Mini search appliance to help customers find more quickly the products they need from the more than 25,000 number of products we sell. In the past 7 months since adding the feature, and making no other major changes to the Web site, transactions have skyrocketed 204%.
Like many online businesses eCompressedair was started in a basement by myself with support from our Massachusettes operation. eCompressedair went live September 2002. Fast forward a few years and eCompressedair is a profitable business with offices in Charlotte, NC.
We began assessing eCompressedair.com’s search functionality in February 2006 and realized our existing search feature had several downsides: it only indexed store product pages, could not recognize partial part numbers, and often returned inaccurate search results. Search is a primary navigation method. And visitors demand a b site search and alternate navigation schemes. Having a bad site search costs profits everyday. I gave consideration to either customizing my existing search, purchasing an add-on search tool or service, or Google’s Mini search appliance.
I pulled the trigger purchasing a Google Mini in March 2006. The Mini was a low risk business decision. Priced at $2,995 last March with a year of technical support and upgrades, the Mini only had to add $500 a month in margin to my online business to pay for itself in six months. I knew a significant improvement in helping customers find the products they need would lead to more orders. All the e-commerce research I reviewed claimed a significant sales increase came from improving search.
My reasons for selecting a Mini were many: one search for my static pages and dynamic pages; relevant search results; keyword and synonym functionality; search results formatted similar to Google results which provides customers with greater familiarity with the feature, and with little technical know-how the Mini can be seamlessly integrated with any site.
Rolling the Mini out went smoothly. Once installed, I logged in to my Mini and configured the search and serving. I ran a first crawl of eCompressedair. I quickly realized Mini was indexing content that really did not need to be indexed, so I made some quick changes to the search parameters and in short order had a clean index. Of course, I had to add some code to my store and static pages to let visitors search the Mini. And, the Mini’s search results page had to be customized to show my site’s header and footer. You tweak the Mini’s search results page look and feel by a XSLT style sheet. The sheet is well commented and with a little trial and error, our Mini’s results page matched our site’s look and feel completely.
After I had the Mini running for a few weeks I wanted to add product photos to Mini’s search results. After some quick research in Google’s online Mini community and online support website, I learned how to add photos by adding a custom meta tag to my product pages and adjusting the Mini search string. Really it is not a big deal. And, there are other ways to fine tune result pages. Google’s email support and online support web site for the Mini owners is well organized, has a wealth of data, and is easy-to-use. Support responds quickly with real answers.
In September 2006, I added a system log (syslog) to capture all Mini’s search requests. By analyzing the log to find the zero search results, I hope to add products and content to eCompressedair based on what visitors cannot find today. The new Mini version has improved reporting functionality that may eliminate the need to log the search requests to a syslog.
As much fun as it is to play with our high tech toys and yes, Mini is a fun high tech toy, what does it do for the bottom line? Mini must have an MBA cause my online transactions have increased 204%. To put a report card together for the Mini, I analyzed eCompressedair’s online transactions and sales dollars for the seven months since adding Mini, April 06 to October 06 and compared it to the 7 months prior to adding the Mini September 05 to March 06. With the increase in the number of online transactions, our average online transaction amount reduced some from $242 before Mini to $201. The same 7 month comparison shows a 249% sales dollar growth since adding Mini.
I am convinced Mini contributed significantly to our growth over the last seven months. I have no doubt it is largely responsible for our 204% increase in online sales transactions. eCompressedair is not done with Google Mini search appliances. We plan to add a second Mini to serve as a search tool on our future intranet. I am sure a second Mini will help our business grow, while our first Mini continues to contribute to the bottom line. "
